STATEMENT

Dorota Mytych grew up in Poland in the 1980’s during the communist era. At that time to see crowds everywhere was common: organized military marches, organized groups of protesting students and chaotic dispersion of them, striking, people queuing for food, shoes and toilet paper, or lining up to catch the bus. These experiences have influenced her recent work.

Dorota is particularly interested in crowds of people seen from a distance, so that she can perceive a general overview, a pattern created by people. When tighten the focus, the details of the crowd gains resolution creating a more intimate personal relationship. This shift from the anonymous- and sometimes intimidating - to the intimate has been the subject of her recent work. The tealeaf drawings video “Mutatis Mutandis” is an exploration/transformation of the crowds, small human beings who are themselves elements of a larger gathering, a substance that begins to move into something new.
